Hiring drops by 13.7% in the month, but indefinite contracts triple

The number of unemployed registered in the offices of the public employment services (former Inem) rose by 17,679 unemployed in September (0.6%), which placed the total number of unemployed at 2,941,919, its lowest figure in a month of September since 2008, according to data published this Tuesday by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy.

The rise in unemployment in September, the third consecutive after those of July and August, is the highest in a month of September since 2018, when it increased by 20,441 people, although it is more moderate than usual for this month, which in the average of the years 2008-2019 it added 46,307 unemployed.

“This is a smaller increase than usual and that follows the general trend of this month, marked by the strong seasonality after the summer campaign,” underlines the Ministry.

In September 2020 and 2021, with the end of the restrictions due to the pandemic, unemployment fell by 26,329 and 76,113 people, while in 2019 it rose by 13,907 people, below what it has done this year.

Since 1996, the year in which the comparable historical series begins, there have been increases in unemployment in 22 months of September and decreases in five, the last two in 2020 and 2021.

In seasonally adjusted terms, registered unemployment rose by 466 people in September.

In the last year, unemployment accumulated a decrease of 315,883 unemployed, which is 9.7% less, with a drop in female unemployment of 173,353 women (-9%) and a drop in male unemployment of 142,530 men (-10, 7%).

Unemployment fell in September in three economic sectors, with agriculture in the lead. Specifically, unemployment fell in this sector by 7,024 people in relation to the month of August (-5%). It is followed by construction, which subtracted 4,765 unemployed in September (-2%), and industry, with 239 less unemployed (-0.1%).

In contrast, the group without a previous job added 5,016 unemployed in September (2%), and the services added 24,691 people to their list of unemployed (1.2%) due to the end of the summer campaign.

Unemployment rose in September for both sexes, although somewhat more among men. Specifically, male unemployment increased by 9,794 people (0.6%) and female unemployment, by 7,885 women (0.4%). Thus, at the end of the ninth month of the year, the number of unemployed women stood at 1,758,886, its best figure for a month of September since 2008, while the number of unemployed men totaled 1,183,033 unemployed.

By age, unemployment among young people under 25 years of age increased by 6.5% in September, with 12,787 more unemployed than at the end of August, while unemployment among people aged 25 and over grew by 4,892 unemployed (0. two%).

Labor has highlighted that, despite the rebound registered in September, the total number of unemployed young people under 25 years of age (210,273) is the lowest in a month of September of the entire historical series.

Registered unemployment rose in September in twelve autonomous communities, especially in Andalusia (6,788 unemployed), Catalonia (3,373 unemployed) and Asturias (2,565), and fell in the Basque Country (-2,078 unemployed), the Canary Islands (-1,628), the Valencian Community ( -1,250), La Rioja (-745) and Madrid (-130).

As for the provinces, unemployment fell in 15 of them, led by Seville (-2,849 unemployed), Valencia (-2,469 unemployed) and Vizcaya (-1,218), and increased in 37, mainly in Cádiz (5,962 unemployed), Asturias (2,565 unemployed) and Malaga (2,176).

Registered unemployment among foreigners rose in September by 8,968 unemployed (2.5%) compared to the previous month, until the total number of unemployed immigrants stood at 365,744. In this way, half of the increase in unemployment in September this year is due to the loss of employment among foreigners.

In September, 1,660,792 contracts were registered, 13.7% less than in the same month of 2021. Of all of them, 775,856 were indefinite contracts, a figure that is equivalent to 46.7% of the total contracts made in the month and that It is more than triple (258%) that of September 2021.

Labor has highlighted that this “strong” rebound in fixed hiring has spread to practically all branches of activity, with agriculture registering a percentage of fixed contracts over the total of 52.7%, and construction, 75.9 %. Among those under 30 years of age, the weight of permanent contracts was 47%, compared to the average of 10.1% for the 2017-2019 period.

Of the total number of permanent contracts signed in September, 298,273 have been full-time, 149% more than in the same month last year; 281,253 were permanent-discontinuous contracts, multiplying the figure for September 2021 by more than seven, and 196,330 were permanent part-time contracts, with a year-on-year increase of 229%.

Of all the contracts signed in September, 884,936 were temporary contracts, 48.2% less than in the same month of 2021.

In the first nine months of 2022, 5.25 million permanent contracts have been made, more than triple that in the same period of 2021, thanks to the promotion of the labor reform, in force since the beginning of this year. Temporary hiring has fallen in this period by 27.6%.

The Ministry has also reported that spending on unemployment benefits reached in August (latest data available) the figure of 1,763.4 million euros.

The total number of beneficiaries of unemployment benefits stood at 1,796,339 people at the end of August.

The average monthly expenditure per beneficiary, not including the agricultural subsidy in Andalusia and Extremadura, amounted to 1,004 euros in the eighth month of the year.

The benefit data is always one month behind the unemployment data, so that Labor has published this Tuesday the unemployment figures for September and the benefit statistics for August.
