The Government has announced, with its publication in the Official State Gazette (BOE), the regulatory bases of the second phase of the Unico I D program, for which aid will be granted for an amount of 116 million euros (86 million for the year 2022 and 30 for the following year), in order to promote research and development around the next generation mobile technology, advanced 5G and 6G, this being its first call for the period 2022-2023 within the Recovery Plan.
This second phase complements the first call, resolved in 2021, and which awarded more than 90 million euros to 113 public center research projects with a low maturity level. On this occasion, the Government directs aid to the most advanced phases of the RDI cycle in order to strengthen the business fabric, generate quality jobs, promote entrepreneurship and start up startups.
Specifically, the aid will go to two programmes, one for the financing of 6G research infrastructure and the acquisition of scientific-technical equipment, endowed with 23 million euros, and another for the development of advanced 5G R&D projects, which will include with financing of 93 million euros.
Universities and public centers that opt ??for the first program must present individual projects with a budget of between 300,000 euros and two million euros. For its part, the projects of the second program will be framed within areas such as optical and photonic technologies, ‘machine learning’, improvements to RAN systems, ‘edge computing’, privacy and security.
The Recovery Plan, which has among its objectives to favor the consolidation of Spain as one of the leading countries in the deployment of 5G and 6G by promoting R&D in this field, foresees a financing of 230 million until the year 2023 for the creation of an ecosystem of research and innovation around this technology.
To complete the path started with the first call, this second phase has begun, which favors the creation of a research and innovation ecosystem, including aid for projects that are at more advanced levels of development (3-6), with a role leading private sector.
