The president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, assured this Thursday before the president of the United States, Joe Biden, that when he has to leave the Presidency of the country he will do so “in a democratic way.”
“This year we have elections in Brazil and we want clean, reliable and auditable elections so that there are no doubts (…) I was elected for democracy and I am sure that when I leave the Government, it will also be democratically,” he maintained. the Brazilian president in relation to the elections to be held on October 2, according to a White House statement issued after a bilateral meeting between the two presidents.
Bolsonaro’s statement, which was given at the IX Summit of the Americas, took place after the Brazilian president has questioned the legitimacy of the Brazilian elections on several occasions in recent months, even going so far as to question the reliability of electronic ballot boxes and denounced a beginning of fraud in 2018, when he won the elections.
Likewise, before the meeting with his American counterpart, Bolsonaro once again questioned the electoral system in Brazil, as well as that of the United States.
“It is the American people who say it (that there was fraud in the US elections). Trump was doing very well. And many things came to us that made us doubt (…) We do not want that to happen in Brazil,” the Brazilian president has assured, according to a report shared by the White House.
Hours later, after the meeting between Biden and Bolsonaro, the president of the United States sent a message of confidence in the Brazilian electoral system: “Brazil is a wonderful place, the people for vibrant and inclusive democracy and strong electoral institutions” .
The White House has previously defended the reliability of the elections in the South American country. “We have been very direct in expressing great confidence in the ability of Brazilian institutions to carry out free and fair elections with adequate guarantees to protect against fraud,” explained in a statement, the director for the US Western Hemisphere, Juan Gonzalez.
Likewise, the United States also urged the Brazilian Executive not to undermine confidence in the electoral process, “especially since there were no signs of fraud in the previous elections,” according to the White House in a statement.
