the outgoing government wants everyone to switch to electric driving as soon as possible and will therefore also make a subsidy budget available in 2022. But what is different about that arrangement as of Monday morning? And how do you get that subsidy electric passenger cars private individuals (SEPP)?

the subsidy pot for the purchase or private lease of a new electric car was empty in no time last year. Starting this week, on January 3, to be precise, a new and larger subsidy budget will be available for the purchase of new and used electric cars.

however, the SEPP in 2022 is lower than this year. Where last year-if you were there in time-when buying a new electric car with a catalog value of at least 12,000 euros and a maximum of 45,000 euros you still received an allowance of 4,000 euros, that purchase subsidy in 2022 is 3,350 euros. According to the Ministry of infrastructure and Water Management, this will allow more people to benefit from the purchase subsidy. In 2020, the subsidy pot was empty after eight days.

but not everyone is eligible for the financial allowance. After all, the Ministry sets a number of conditions, both on the car and on the agreement and the subsidy application.

the subsidy pot for 2022 is filled with an amount of around 71 million euros, significantly more than the 14.4 million euros available for 2021. The allowance is available for both newly purchased cars, cars in the private lease and used cars.

“the subsidy pot is significantly more in 2022 than in 2021.”

these are the subsidy rules for new electric cars

to be eligible for the SEPP when buying a new car, the electric car must meet the following conditions:

the electric range is at least 120 kilometers; the list price is not lower than 12,000 euros and not higher than 45,000 euros; the electric car was not registered in the name of the intended owner before January 1, 2022.

the conditions for the agreement and subsidy application:

you must have a written purchase agreement of the purchase of the electric car; both the registration and the purchase agreement are in the name of the subsidy applicant; the purchase agreement is concluded on or after 1 January 2022; the subsidy application is submitted within sixty days after the signing of the purchase agreement; the subsidy applicant has a valid residential address in the Netherlands. These are the subsidy rules for used (second-hand) electric cars

the subsidy pot for used electric cars for 2022 is filled with an amount of around 20.4 million euros. That amount is for both purchase and lease of a used electric passenger car.

in order to qualify for the SEPP of 2,000 euros when buying a used electric car, similar conditions apply to the purchase of a new electric car. A number of important aspects to take into account:

the purchase of a used electric car also requires a written purchase agreement in the name of the applicant; the electric car has an electric range of at least 120 kilometers; the original list price of the car was at least 12,000 euros and a maximum of 45,000 euros; the used electric car has not previously been in the name of a subsidy applicant or of someone who has lived at the same address. on January 3, the government will turn the cap of the new subsidy pot at 9.00 am. Although there is a larger budget available in 2022 than last year and the purchase subsidy is lower, it is wise to be quick. That is why it is important to know how and where to apply for the subsidy.

to submit your application, DigiD access is required. So make sure you have these things available and in order. The SEPP can be requested immediately after the conclusion of the purchase agreement.

please also note that the purchased electric car, both new and used, must remain in the name of the applicant for at least three years continuously.

How will this subsidy scheme continue in the coming years?

after 2022, the purchase subsidy will continue to decrease annually. In 2023, the amount will be 2,950 euros and from 2024, the purchase subsidy will be 2,550 euros. Initially, in 2023, 3,350 euros would still be given and in 2024, 2,950 euros in purchase subsidy on a new EV.

the incentive scheme was completed at the end of 2024, while a subsidy amount of 2,550 euros was originally planned for 2025. The purchase subsidy for used electric cars will remain at 2024 at 2, 000 euros. This incentive scheme will cease from 2025.
