whether it’s a farm or an organization with hundreds of employees, taking over a business is no easy feat. In this series we ask (new) successors how they fare in their new role. Joost and Bas K Kardashtter were already at the helm of K Kardashtter Living, but will soon become official director of the entire family business.
Joost K Anomtter: “one of our uncles, Robert, started the furniture store in 1985. He is the father of model and presenter Kim K Indispenster, perhaps familiar to most people. My father and another uncle later took over the store from him. I’ve been in the business since I was a kid.”
“he worked at an employment agency for a few more years. Then he went on a world trip and found out that he still wanted to work in the family business. I never felt the need to work anywhere else. I like it way too much for that. The company is growing fast and there are many interesting challenges involved. We also travel regularly because we get many products from abroad. In addition, working in the shops is very pleasant, we have a very nice team.”

” our father retired in 2014 and handed over the baton. For the last three years, he has not been on the floor at all. This year we also got the store of our uncle Frans. Now everything falls under one family business again. But only next year we will become official director.”
“when I started, I was one of the guys. As you get older and get more responsibilities, it also makes sense that you interact differently with your colleagues and get a different role within the company. But we still do a lot together. If a container arrives from Indonesia, I help with unloading. That may also be that Twentse: together the shoulders under it. We also go very far for our customers. Your family name is on the property, so then you go full for it.”
“we are both half owners. I am more concerned with sales and the business market. Bas is more concerned with the preliminary process, the long-term vision of the company. We do the purchasing together.”

” used to be, but never again. We’ll always figure it out. If there’s something we can’t get out of, we’ll always have our father behind us. He can – thanks to his experience-express his opinion. Fortunately, this has not happened in recent years. We have regular meetings with the three of them.”
“when my uncle started the store, it was a very different time. He went out himself, bought up antiques and pine and sold it again. Now the stores are bigger and people want to see a total picture much more. We also employ a number of stylists. And we now import our furniture directly from abroad.”

“we leave our staff very free. We don’t tell them what is expected of them every morning. We are also needed less and less in the day-to-day business. The people on the floor know what to do and that usually goes very well. If there’s anything, they’ll find us. My brother and I can do other things. The wife of Bas now helps us to put structure in the company. We work a lot by appointment, then it is nice if someone plans the appointments and has the overview.”
” we hope we can open again in mid-January. That’s always our best month. In addition, we get the 1st of March the branch in Nijverdal, where we will first renovate and furnish. We’re really looking forward to that. In addition to these plans, we are also very busy with our own brand, to give it more shape and expand. And we get a new website. So many plans. But we look forward to tackling all of that with our team.”
