John McCloskey was a pioneer in the discovery of the 1829 Capped Bust Curl Base 2 dime. This was published in his coauthored book United States Dimes 1796-1837. remains the main reference for the series.
He published over 200 articles.
It is easy to see the 1829 Capped Bust Curl Base 2 dime without magnification because it is clearly distinct from the Flat Base 2 commonly seen on 1829 Capped Bust dimes. McCloskey described the coin as “prohibitively scarce, even in lower grades.”
Heritage offered the JR-10 discovery coins in its January Florida United Numismatists Auction. They feature a clear Curl Base 2 date.
Heritage states in its catalog description that JR-10 is rare in all grades and that most examples are well-worn.
It was graded Fine 12 by Numismatic Guaranty Co. and is also listed under FS-301 in Cherrypickers’ Guide to Rare U.S. The Varieties were sold for $11,100.
Another NGC Very Good 8 graded NGC was sold for $7800.
