The anglo-Dutch food manufacturer Unilever is in the sauce that we have here in the Netherlands, known as the ‘zigeunersaus in Germany with a different name, because the name is discriminatory and can happen to anyone.
The company confirms that, to the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag that “the term ‘zigeunersaus’ may be misunderstood, and that’s why we decided to put our Knorr sauce with a different name”.
In the Netherlands, and the sauce under the brand name of Remia in the us, in Germany it does Knorr-that is, both brands are owned by Unilever. The name of the sauce is Paprikasauce Ungarische Art, or sauce in the Hungarian style. A couple of weeks, the new sauce will be in German stores.
The Central Council of German Sinti and Roma have been very happy with the decision. “It is a good job Knorr respond to the complaints of a lot of people here,” said chairman, Romani Rose, the newspaper reported. However, he says that he is aware of concerns about the growing racism and discrimination against Roma and Sinti. “With this in mind, zigeunerschnitzel, and zigeunersaus is not as urgent for us.”
