He believes that the current penalties are “disproportionate” compared to other public order crimes
MADRID, 20 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Minister of Justice, Pilar Llop, considered this Thursday that the “necessary” review of the crime of sedition must be separated from the negotiation of the General State Budgets for 2023, as requested by the Esquerra Republicana (ERC).
Asked for her opinion about this ERC lawsuit, the person in charge of Justice has pointed out that Spain has to “harmonize itself in democratic terms” with other European countries, adapting the characteristics of sedition so that there are “adequate penalties for the behaviors that are considered seditious”.
“It is tempting to make interpretations, but the Budgets go one way and the reform of sedition goes theirs,” said the minister at an informative breakfast at the New Economy Forum.
Llop recalled that the idea of ??this reform predates her appointment as minister and has specified that, with her predecessors in office, the Ministry had already been working on it “at a technical level”.
“Obviously”, sedition needs a review because it is included among public order crimes and the penalties are “disproportionate” when compared to others in that category, the minister maintained.
