EV charging specialist Solus Power and QinetiQ collaborate to find solutions for electrified battlespace

LONDON, April 24, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Solus Power, a leading innovator in electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with global defense and security company QinetiQ.

The strategic partnership aims to research and develop advanced electric vehicle charging solutions, suitable for fleet and infrastructure charging, as well as the specific needs of the Ministry of Defense (MOD), leveraging the respective expertise of the two organisations.

Solus Power is embarking on the development of a cutting-edge mobile EV solution focused on modular, stackable and easy-to-transport power units, each of which is the size of a briefcase and can be easily deployed and shared between users.

In parallel, QinetiQ has been working with clients in the defense and security industry to understand the challenges, threats and opportunities posed by climate change. One such challenge is how to flexibly charge electric vehicles in various locations and infrastructure environments, which in some respects mirrors the challenges experienced in high-demand civil applications such as airport parking, car rental management and the general operation of the car parks.

Thanks to the collaboration between the two companies, QinetiQ supports Solus Power to understand the needs of defense and security customers globally, in addition to offering its expertise in energy sources and electrification. This collaboration underscores QinetiQ’s ongoing efforts to partner with SMEs and academic institutions to address pressing customer challenges, including those related to climate change and energy transformation. The focus on mobile electric vehicle charging highlights the changing landscape of defense and security infrastructure, recognizing the importance of sustainable and adaptable energy solutions.

In November, Solus Power showcased its technology at QinetiQ’s ‘Understanding Tomorrow’s Sustainability Technology Today’ event, highlighting its potential to contribute to a more sustainable, efficient and flexible energy future for defense operations.

“Solus welcomes the opportunity recognized in this MOU to collaborate with an organization of QinetiQ’s prestige and experience in the defense sector, and with its exceptional track record of innovation and solution development,” explained Solus Power CEO, Stas Leonidou.

Victoria Doherty, Head of Electrification at QinetiQ, highlighted: “Enabling flexibility to provide electrical power where and when needed underpins future operational advantage. By working across sectors to transfer existing solutions, we will accelerate success in this area.”
