SEOUL, South Korea, June 5, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Lunit (KRX:328130.KQ), a leading global provider of AI-powered cancer diagnostic solutions, today announced the signing of a supply and license agreement with Capio S:t Göran Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. Under the agreement, Lunit will provide S:t Göran Lunit Hospital with INSIGHT MMG, an artificial intelligence solution for mammography analysis, for the next three years.

Capio S:t Göran Hospital is the largest private hospital in Sweden with more than 2,300 medical employees. It is operated by Capio, a part of the Ramsay Santé group. The hospital provides planned and emergency medical care services to 100,000 patients in the Stockholm region.

The integration of Lunit’s AI solution will enable Capio S:t Göran Hospital to analyze the mammography images of approximately 78,000 patients each year, which will significantly contribute to Sweden’s national cancer screening program.

Sweden currently struggles with a pronounced shortage of radiologists, which poses challenges for efficient analysis of mammograms. In response, Lunit INSIGHT MMG is poised to play a critical role in addressing this shortage and improving the effectiveness of cancer screening programs. By harnessing the power of artificial intelligence, the solution helps radiologists accurately interpret mammography images, easing the burden on limited resources.

This collaboration marks a breakthrough where, for the first time, AI takes on the role of interpreting mammograms as an independent reader in a validated, structural environment. By leveraging AI technology in a secure, scalable, and efficient way, this innovative approach not only improves productivity, but also cuts the required workforce in half in the dual-sensing environment.

The decision to adopt Lunit INSIGHT MMG by S:t Göran Hospital was bolstered by the results of the world’s first prospective medical AI study. Led by Dr. Fredrik Strand at Karolinska University Hospital. The study examined data from 55,581 Swedish women provided by S:t Göran Hospital. The study demonstrated that combined analysis by one radiologist and AI achieved higher cancer detection rates and lower recurrence rates compared to analysis by two radiologists.

“This innovative step to become the world’s first breast center to use AI as a standalone reader, allows radiologists to be less overwhelmed by excessive amounts of reading, allowing them to focus on more advanced diagnoses and ensuring turnaround times.” shorter wait times for patients,” said Dr. Karin Dembrower, senior physician at the Capio S:t Göran Hospital Mammography Clinic, who is locally responsible for the study. “In the short term, we anticipate detecting more cancers; in the long term, we anticipate a decreased interval of cancers and detection of smaller tumors. We are excited to conduct further studies to explore these possibilities.”

“We are delighted to partner with Capio S:t Göran Hospital and be part of their innovative efforts to transform cancer screening workflows,” said Brandon Suh, CEO of Lunit. “This collaboration represents a significant milestone in harnessing artificial intelligence technology to address the shortage of radiologists in Sweden. Lunit INSIGHT MMG has the potential to revolutionize mammography screening, make a substantial contribution to the national cancer screening program and ultimately also improve patient outcomes.”

Lunit remains committed to forging partnerships with medical institutions across Europe, offering advanced medical experiences for patients and improving the operational efficiency of hospitals.
