Madrid, April 19, 2023 – The delegate of the Illustrious Official College of Geologists (ICOG) in Galicia, has signed a collaboration agreement with the Portuguese Association of Geologists to encourage the exploration of the potential reserves of mineral resources that Galicia and Portugal have and which are essential for European development.

It is a signature carried out in Porto, Luis Lopes, President of the Board of Directors of the Portuguese Association of Geologists and Pablo Núñez, delegate in Galicia of the College of Geologists, urged the competent administrations to create commissions or departments to implement joint action plans that guarantee the enhancement of our mining potential.

They recall that geopolitical changes have shown that a stable supply of mineral raw materials is essential. In this sense, geologists have become essential professionals in the paradigm shift of the energy model that the European Union has proposed for the year 2050. “Energy sources are under our feet,” they argue.

“We demand the geological investigation of the materials that make up our subsoil, only from this knowledge can the possibility of exploiting the geological resources that we need arise” they explain in the agreement.

They also want to vindicate before the administrations, the enhancement, the commitment to knowledge and the care of the unique and universal heritage.

“Our science knows no borders, Geology is not the geology of Galicia or Portugal, Europe or America, North or South; Geology is the Geology of the Earth”, they point out. Finally, with this memorandum of collaboration want to make an appeal to promote knowledge and development through Geology. “Our science, which should be the spearhead of development, has been lagging behind for years due to the indifference of the different administrations,” they lament.
