The party has approved coalitions in Formentera (Balearic Islands) and several towns in the Canary Islands, as well as agreements in Aragon and Navarra

The Popular Party faces the elections on May 28 with a great renovation in its heads of municipal and regional lists, since of the twelve CCAA that are examined at the polls, eight candidates make their debut in these elections, which means 66 %. In addition, there are 64% of new faces in the number one of the provincial capitals compared to the elections four years ago.

The party led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo is finalizing the complete candidacies for the May elections, given that the parties must submit their lists between April 19 and 24, according to the decree calling for elections published in the Official State Gazette ( BOE).

Only 12 of the 17 autonomous communities in Spain renew their regional Parliaments this May 28 (Andalusia, Galicia, the Basque Country, Catalonia and Castilla y León do not celebrate regional). In these dozen territories, the PP presents eight new headliners, which represents a 66% renewal.

Thus, María Guardiola from Extremadura is presented for the first time, who wants to wrest the Presidency of Extremadura from the socialist Guillermo Fernández de Vara, who was ousted from office between 2011 and 2015 by the ‘popular’ José Antonio Monago.

In the Balearic Islands, the Balearic Marga Prohens also made her debut (she replaced Biel Company at the head of the presidency of the PP of the Balearic Islands) and aspires to evict Francina Armengol (PSOE) from the Government of the islands. In Aragon, Jorge Azcón, who was the headliner of the PP four years ago for the Mayor’s Office of Zaragoza, also competes for the first time.

In Asturias, the PP has opted for a candidate with a European profile, Diego Canga, who has replaced Teresa Mallada, who was a personal bet of Pablo Casado four years ago. Gonzalo Capellán is also performing for the first time in La Rioja, a region in which José Ignacio Ceniceros attended four years ago, and in which they expect

Also making his debut in the regional elections is the PP candidate for the Valencian Community, Carlos Mazón, –who replaced Isabel Bonig at the head of the PPCV–, who aspires to wrest this region from the socialist Ximo Puig.

In the Canary Islands, the PP has opted for another new face, Manuel Domínguez, a community that Asier Antona, now a senator of the Popular Group, attended four years ago, who lost to the socialist Víctor Torres. In Navarra, the PP competed together with UPN and Cs on the Navarra Suma platform headed by Javier Esparza but now performing alone with Javier García as the headliner.

On May 28, the regional candidates of the PP repeat in Madrid, Murcia, Cantabria and Castilla-La Mancha. The party counts on maintaining its two regional governments in Madrid and Murcia with Isabel Díaz Ayuso and Fernando López Miras, respectively. In the case of Castilla-La Mancha, the ‘popular’ Paco Núñez aspires to recover a fief that has always been in socialist hands, except in the 2011-2015 legislature that María Dolores de Cospedal governed.

The Cantabrian María José Sáenz de Buruaga, who hopes to wrest the Presidency from regionalist Miguel Ángel Revilla, also repeats as a candidate. Four years ago, the then president of the PP, Pablo Casado, chose the athlete Ruth Beitia as a candidate in Cantabria, but decided to leave politics just two weeks after being appointed and, in the end, it was Buruaga who faced the polls .

In the May elections, two historic candidates will also appear again in the autonomous cities: Juan Jesús Vivas, who hopes to revalidate the government in Ceuta, and Juan José Imbroda, who hopes to recover the baton after losing it four years ago to the hands of by Eduardo de Castro, who headed the list of Cs.

In the 50 provincial capitals, the PP also presents a high percentage of renewal, since the ‘popular’ present 32 new candidates in provincial capitals while repeating 18, which represents 64% of new faces compared to four years ago years.

The PP Electoral Committee chaired by Galician Diego Calvo -who is vice president of the Xunta de Galicia- approved in January the headliners in the 50 provincial capitals and the three candidates for the provincial councils. In these candidacies, the Popular Party presents 20 women and 30 men, which means 40% of women.

There are autonomies with a high renewal, such as Andalusia, where six of eight candidates will debut for the first time on May 28 and only José María Bellido repeats in Córdoba and the veteran Francisco de la Torre in Málaga.

Renewal in Aragon is also high, where only Emma Buj repeats in Teruel but the candidates from Huesca and Zaragoza, Lorena Orduna and Natalia Chueca, are new. In the same way, Catalonia has three new profiles: in Barcelona, ??with Daniel Sirera, Girona with Jaume Veray and Tarragona with María Mercé Martorell, and in this autonomy only Xavi Palau repeats in Lleida.

Last Friday the term to formalize the electoral coalitions ended. The PP presents electoral coalitions in Formentera (Balearic Islands) and in four municipalities of Gran Canaria: San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Villa de Ingenio and Fuencaliente, as reported by the party, as approved last Monday by the National Board of Directors of the party

In addition, it has given the green light to a collaboration agreement between the Aragonese PP and the Aragonese electoral formation for the municipal and regional elections. The collaboration agreement between the Navarre PP and the Navarra Platform promoted by deputies Sergio Sayas and Carlos Adanero, expelled from the Unión del Pueblo Navarro (UPN), has also been approved.
