MADRID, 28 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Government of Belarus has justified the need to strengthen its defensive capabilities given the “legitimate concerns” it has in terms of security and has described as “exaggerated” the international reactions to the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons, announced on Saturday by the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin.
The Belarusian Foreign Ministry has stated in a statement that, “during the last two and a half years”, since the controversial elections of August 2020 that revalidated the mandate of Alexander Lukashenko amid suspicions of fraud, the country has been the victim of pressure “unprecedented” political and economic situation for which he blames the NATO and EU countries.
It is considered the target of “direct and serious” interference in affairs that are solely internal with the aim of changing the political regime in Minsk, while instead the NATO countries bordering Belarus “accumulate” military capacity.
It is in this context that the Lukashenko government frames the latest agreement with Russia for the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons, which it does not consider “nothing new”. He has argued that collaboration in this area with Moscow does not in any way constitute a violation of international commitments, in line with the thesis that the Russian authorities have also defended in recent days.
“More than 150 American tactical nuclear weapons are stored in European NATO member countries and more than 250 aircraft have been prepared for possible use,” the Belarusian Foreign Ministry has warned, criticizing the West’s alleged double standards in time to assess the strengthened alliance between Putin and Lukashenko.
For this reason, he has called on all parties to move from the rhetoric of confrontation to a “constructive” dialogue and “mutual respect” with which security can be guaranteed not only for the region, but also for the entire world. .
