This Monday, Maritime Rescue intercepted a canoe with 105 people on board, two of whom died during the crossing and another was in serious condition, when it was sailing towards the island of Gran Canaria, according to sources from public organizations.
The rescue operation began after the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Las Palmas received a notice reporting the presence of a canoe 13 miles south of Gran Canaria.
Once the sea guard ‘Calíope’ was mobilized, it headed to the area and intercepted the canoe, verifying that among its occupants there were two deceased. Next, he transferred all those rescued to the Arguineguín dock, in the municipality of Mogán.
There, a large medical device had been deployed that attended to the occupants of the intercepted canoe, confirming the death of two people. Likewise, a man was transferred in serious condition by medical helicopter from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) to a hospital.
In addition, five other people have been assisted at the dock and their evacuation to health centers is pending. SUC, Primary Care and Red Cross volunteers continue to work in the area.
