-Cognizant implements Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology for the Canberra Institute of Technology Student Association

Collaboration with CITSA offers technology to allow students access to the Student Association store almost 24/7

SYDNEY, Jan. 31, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Cognizant (Nasdaq: CTSH), one of the world’s leading professional services firms, today announced that it has been appointed by the Canberra Institute of Technology Student Association (CITSA) for integration of payment systems and support for Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology in the Café Yala Plus Student Association store. CITSA is the first educational provider to implement this technology in the southern hemisphere. The Café Yala Plus Student Association store offers a fast, contactless retail experience for students who can walk into the campus store, get what they need and leave, avoiding lines and checkouts.

“Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology benefits all CIT students, especially those studying outside of normal business hours,” said Andrew Scotford, CEO of the CIT Student Association. “Many CIT students combine work, study and training, so flexibility and accessibility are very important. Many students living on the CIT Bruce Campus lack easy access to nearby shops. Café YalaPlus now offers a convenient access to food, beverages and other essential items.”

The continued deployment of Just Walk Out technology across Australian educational institutions represents a strategic growth opportunity for Cognizant to demonstrate new capabilities in a sector expected to grow rapidly. Cognizant helps organizations implement and deliver technology solutions designed to improve customer experiences and support rapid growth, while minimizing the risk of technology misalignment.

The solution will reduce friction in the checkout process and improve the shopping experience while streamlining inventory management for the Student Union. Just Walk Out technology is designed to transform the retail experience by leveraging advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, such as computer vision and deep learning, including generative AI, to create a frictionless shopping experience.

“We are delighted to have been selected by CITSA to deliver this technology to enhance the student shopping experience,” said Rob Marchiori, Head of Cognizant Australia. “By automating the checkout process, the Student Union is able to offer nearly 24-hour access to the in-store resources students need to focus on their studies. This is a testament to Cognizant’s strong focus on implementing appropriate technology for their purpose and designed to improve the customer experience.

“We congratulate the Canberra Institute of Technology Student Association for enhancing the student experience on campus with the latest technology without checking out,” said Jon Jenkins, vice president of Just Walk Out technology at Amazon. “We are delighted to collaborate with the Student Association to introduce Just Walk Out technology at Café YalaPlus, the first implementation of its kind at a higher education institution in the southern hemisphere. Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology will offer a new level of convenience for students, allowing them easy access to refreshments day and night.”
