MADRID, 22 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The director of the Civil Guard, María Gámez, has presented her resignation this morning to the Minister of the Interior because her husband has been summoned in the framework of a legal proceeding, as Gámez herself has just announced at a press conference.

Thus, she has indicated that she resigned from her position “after having learned” that her husband “has been summoned in the framework of a judicial proceeding.” She has described the decision as “difficult” but assures that she has done it to protect her family and the Civil Guard.

She has specified that she makes the decision, without entering into the right to the presumption of innocence, also that of her husband, for “principles, honesty and responsibility.”

According to sources close to the Civil Guard inform Europa Press, the current Government delegate in Madrid, Mercedes González, will be the one to assume the position of director of the Civil Guard.

María Gámez replaced Félix Azón at the head of the Civil Guard in January 2020, both with Fernando Grande-Marlaska as Interior Minister. Previously, she was a subdelegate of the Government in the province of Malaga and a councilor in the Malaga City Council.
