The chief of the United States Capitol Police (USCP), Tom Menger, has admitted on Monday the possibility of a new assault as occurred on January 6, 2021, despite the fact that he has highlighted the measures implemented to improve the response to an incident of this caliber.

“As we approach the two-year anniversary of one of the darkest days in our nation’s history, we must answer this critical question: ‘Could it happen again on January 6?'” Capitol Police.

“With the polarized state of our nation, an attack like the one suffered by our Department could be attempted again,” the police officer acknowledged, adding that “if the unthinkable happens,” the authorities will be “ready.”

Menger has related that the USPD has “been working around the clock to implement more than 100 significant improvements”, thanks to the support of Congress.

Thus, he explained that the current situation is “clearly better than before the attack on January 6”, while he stressed that “there is still work to be done”.

“The current threat climate, particularly against elected officials, will require continued and heightened vigilance. We will do everything possible to fulfill our mission to protect members of Congress, the Capitol complex, and the legislative process,” he concluded. .

The Chief of Police has detailed the measures adopted, among which are the incorporation of a new director of Intelligence or the capacity of the Civil Disturbance Unit. Congress passed legislation to allow the head of the USCP to declare a state of emergency and have the National Guard participate.

In addition, detailed incident action plans will now be required to establish the responsibilities of officers participating in demonstrations and events.
