PEKIN, 29 Nov. (DPA/EP) –

China has deployed the Police this Tuesday in a large number of cities in the country to prevent new protests against the strict measures imposed by the Government within the framework of the ‘Covid Zero’ policy.

The protests that have rocked mainland China in recent days, rare in the country, sparked a deadly fire at a residential building in Xinjiang that killed ten people over the weekend, following allegations that COVID restrictions made rescue efforts difficult.

Security forces have detained passers-by, checking their phones for suspicious content or software that could be used to circumvent Internet censorship, the DPA agency reports.

In Beijing, the Police have concentrated on the Liangma River promenade, near the diplomatic quarter. Meanwhile, in Shanghai’s financial hub, officers have installed barriers to prevent large crowds from gathering.

China is recording the highest number of COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, reporting 38,400 new cases on Tuesday. With these figures, the authorities are applying extensive movement restrictions in multiple cities.
