MADRID, 1 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, confirmed this Monday that the agency’s safety inspections have begun at the Zaporizhia plant, after a land mine cut off the supply of one of the reactors this Sunday.
Grossi has expressed that these verification works would soon be completed in the two Ukrainian locations, in response to the request of the Zelensky government, and at the end of this week he will proceed to provide his conclusions once carried out.
According to the agency, the reactor is currently partially fed by a nearby thermal plant in order to carry out essential safety functions.
The IAEA representative has also expressed his concern about the working conditions of the Ukrainian employees of the Zaporizhia plant, whom Russia has called to sign a new employment contract, in which the invading country would appear as an employer.
This weekend Grossi has acknowledged his frustration at the difficulty of establishing a safe zone around the nuclear power plant. Both countries hold each other responsible for attacks that on more than one occasion have disconnected the plant, the largest in Europe, from the electrical grid and seriously threatened the operation of its reactors.
