The UN Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, has been “relatively optimistic” on Wednesday about the extension of the cereal export agreement reached between Russia and Ukraine with the mediation of both Turkey and the United Nations.

“We’re looking forward to seeing it renewed soon. It’s important for the market. It’s important for continuity. And I’m still relatively optimistic that we’re going to get there,” Griffiths told reporters, as reported by the Anatolia news agency. .

Griffiths’ comments come after his recent visit to Moscow together with the secretary general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Rebeca Grynspan, to discuss the extension of the agreement, including grain and fertilizer exports. Russians.

Although the export of Ukrainian cereals has been carried out, albeit with certain setbacks, that of Russian fertilizers has not suffered the same fate. Moscow has accused kyiv of failing to comply with it and also considers that both pacts should be executed simultaneously as they were signed at the same time.

The grain deal went ahead after the parties agreed to a UN-sponsored plan to form a coordination center in the city of Istanbul to carry out joint inspections at port entrances and exits and ensure route safety.

In this sense, the Ukrainian ships cross the Black Sea towards the Bosphorus Strait, in Turkey, where said center is located, in which it is checked that the ships do not carry weapons or combat material towards the front.
