MADRID, 23 Sep. (EDITIONS) –

With the return to work, to daily life, we get our act together in many ways, and among other plans we consider recovering what we have ‘lost’ or damaged the most during the summer. See, recover our schedules, our sleep rhythms, as well as follow a healthy diet again.

And summer takes its toll on us not only in those areas. It also impacts our hair and skin, with the strong influence of the sun’s rays, water and chlorine from swimming pools, or the products we use during these months. We spoke at Infosalus about this matter with Dr. Amir Tarighpeyma Shirkhani, who is director of the Medicine and Hair Transplant Unit at the Quirón Infanta Luisa Hospital (Seville).

This specialist in Trichology confesses that, normally, what harms our hair the most is dryness, mainly due to heat and the sun’s rays, which are “especially harmful to the hair fiber.” In the case of the skin, it points to a lack of hydration in the summer, also a result of the heat that causes the skin to dehydrate.

“Due to the characteristics of the dermis, heat seriously harms it. On the scalp it manifests itself in the form of dryness. Consequently, a lot of oil is produced to protect, and in summer many cases of seborrheic dermatitis are seen; on the skin it appears more dryness because there are not so many sebaceous glands to produce that fat and it begins to dry seriously,” he adds.

With all this, the Quirónsalud specialist highlights that to improve the condition of our skin we must start from knowledge of it and know what type of skin we have: “If it is very oily we must hydrate it with protectors that are not so greasy. Dry skin “It’s just the opposite, hydrate them seriously. You always have to hydrate the skin with creams. And don’t use anything that could dry them out. There are people who go overboard with cleaning and don’t also use the right products.”

In the case of hair, Dr. Amir Tarighpeyma confesses that the best advice is to use neutral shampoos for the hair fiber, and avoid popular or low-cost ones, or those with a pH other than neutral. Afterwards, he welcomes applying a good non-greasy conditioner. “They tend to be very protective of the hair fiber, and above all they should be used on the ends,” he adds.

In addition, he believes that you should not use a dryer too much because it dries the fiber too much, nor should you use hair straighteners or products such as hair gel, wax, or foam because, he argues, “they have a very negative effect on the hair.” .

On the other hand, we questioned this specialist about the hair loss that is so common at this time of year and when we should consult with an expert. This trichologist remembers that it is common for hair loss to occur more abundantly on these dates than at other times of the year: “Normally, the hair cycle tends to coincide in time. It is as if we were going to shed our hair and everything that “What it did was protect the hair during the summer and now all weak or damaged hair tends to fall out. So if hair loss increases now, this is quite evident after the summer.”

To counteract this, he considers that the most important thing is to follow adequate nutrition and always recommends: zinc, selenium, magnesium, biotin and vitamin D (it is very necessary to maintain summer levels); He says that some complex with vitamin B3, B5 and B9 is also interesting; But always consult with a specialist before taking supplements because not everyone has the appropriate amount.

“Now, if the hair loss is very noticeable, you should go to a specialist; but if it is discreet, you can take supplements. This is usually seen a lot in the shower, or when combing your hair, where massive hair loss can occur. The incidence of alopecia is increasing a lot in women, in whom this lack of density is seen in a striking way and always remember that you can consult a specialist, who will recommend what to do in these cases,” says Dr. Amir Tarighpeyma Shirkhani.
