The John McCloskey collection, which was sold at Heritage’s January Florida United Numismatists Auction, included other oddities, such as striking errors.

A JR-2 1803 Draped Bust dime, was double struck and graded about Uncirculated Details. It was damaged by Numismatic Guaranty Co. This variety is very rare, with only 20-30 known. This example shows evidence of a second strike, on both sides, and a diagonal gouge on its reverse. This error was sold for $3,600.

Cleaned for $3,000. A JR-1 1807 Draped bust dime was struck 10% off the center and graded very fine by NGC. Heritage stated that the sides were not only struck off center but also exhibit “strong machine double” and was sold for $3,000.
