Silas Stanley Roberts was a born in 1888. He built what the auctioneer described as an “expansive old time” collection. His grandson took the collection and the great-grandchildren are now consigning it for auction.
The Walking Liberty half-dollars were a strong selling point, with a 1917 S Walking Liberty, Obverse Mint Mark half-dollar graded Mint State 65 by Professional Coin Grading Service, which earned $40,800. It is a low-minted coin with 952,000. Top Uncirculated members are very rare. The PCGS graded only one MS-67, which is the best-graded at this service.
According to the cataloger, the Wisps of iridescent Reddish-Apricot peripheral Toning are bolder on the Obverse of this stunning upper end Gem.” He also noted that both sides are high lustrous and have a soft, smooth finish.
