The colorful checkerboard wrasse is the fourth largest design for 2021 in this show, issued on behalf of the British Indian Ocean Territories.

The small-sized fish (Halichoeres hortulanus) discovered in lagoons and sea reefs gets the differentiation of transformation in its own life cycle. All are born female and, based upon societal cues experienced, can develop into men.

Moreover, the color of the fish is contingent on its age. Juveniles are white with stripes, stripes and dots of black. At adulthood, they have a black checkerboard pattern on a silver to green body, along with other colors variously present.

Two versions available

The older checkerboard wrasse is that the subject pictured on those 50-penny offerings. Two coin variations are available, a Proof .925 fine silver coin along with an Uncirculated copper-nickel”Diamond Finish” piece.

The previous coins from the Sea Creatures series were also all provided in the same two finishes.

The featured fish looks on the opposite, swimming by a coral reef, while the obverse showcases the Pobjoy Mint’s exclusive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
