almost twenty years ago, in the summer of 2000, and listed on the stock exchange, Telia, and the government sold 30 percent of its shares. As a minister in Göran Persson’s government, I was responsible for opening the company to private ownership. It was the right one: there is no good reason for the government to take the telecom operators.
But now, in retrospect, one can say that we already have that should be apart of the critical infrastructure of the company, the commercial part of it. Instead, Telia to maintain a monopoly on the local loop, to the infrastructure itself. We have created a semi-private monopoly, and the consequences of it are still evident. Today, Telia seems to be the main competitive market, but the act is still that of a monopolist.
Telia has purchased recently, the television company, the Swedish Government, which owns TV4 and C More. The purchase was approved by the EUROPEAN commission in a couple of weeks ago and were completed a week ago.
the Acquisition has been sharply criticized. The government to take control of the largest private tv channel, the only channel that has seriously challenged the state’s public broadcasters when it comes to breadth and scope, has been compared to the concentration of the media in the countries in which we do not see as a role model. When the affair became known, in June of 2018, I warned of the impact of the Telia would be the principal provider of both public service and TV4.
it was 20 years ago, I saw the need for a avmonopolisering. Today, it is important that the government understand how this privatization will be completed, but that is neither in our interests or the freedom of the media is compromised.
It is both surprising and alarming that the first thing that happens after that Telia has taken over the Swedish TV4 is the channel goes blank for about one-third of the households.
This is what’s happening right now. On the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, and in less than ten days after that, TV4, was at Orange, shut down TV4, for those clients who are looking through a contract with Com Hem and Boxer.
This is a big problem, because the younger generation did not look at the traditional tv set. TV4’s role as the society’s campfire, and that is the only broad private-public-service channel will be lost in about one-third of the viewers of a permanent exclusion, which is now likely to take place.
and Telia need to determine whether or not it is going to behave like any other private company, or as a responsible steward of the socially critical infrastructure. The current hybrid model doesn’t work.
1
firstly, Telia, take responsibility, and to safeguard pluralism and the free competition. do not Lock into the channel TV4. Take the market-determined charge of the licensing of the broadcasting rights, but do not lock out the single-wide, the private alternative to the SVT, behind-the-betalvägg.
now This is nothing new for the government or a socialist government. In 2004, halted the BUSINESS’s purchase of Skandia’s shares in the Boxer, because of the impact of the same owner controls both content and distribution.
2
For a second, should the government break-up of Telia of two parts: is a state part with a number of fiberinfrastrukturen, a private telecommunications operator that is able to compete in a free market.
as A separation, it should be done At the copper and fibre infrastructures are gathered in a separate company in which the state has control and the ability to exercise a significant influence. The new infrastrukturbolaget are collected At the passive access network and the transport network, including the associated fittings and ducts. These activities correspond to what used to be called Skanova. It should be under social control.
the Rest of the assets and business operations within the Telia, like the service to be maintained in a Telia Company.
who, then, must be separated from the parent company, both operationally and financially. As a result, then, is to be preferred since shareholders in this way, and hold harmless out of the process.
So, will allow the infrastructure to be decoupled from the commercial companies who compete for market share, and that is to buy outside the bedroom. A state-controlled copper – and-fiberinfrastrukturnät is important from a defence and security point of view, it is important for the country’s cohesion. At the position of a supplier of a variety of competitive services, however, it is up to the market to decide.
for more than 20 years ago, I saw the need for a avmonopolisering. Today, it is important that the government understand how this privatization will be completed, but that is neither in our interests or the freedom of the media is compromised.
