Madrid, March 21, 2023. Raise awareness, inform and make visible. With these three objectives, intu Xanadú begins a week in which different initiatives in the social and environmental field will be carried out. The first of them will be on the occasion of World Down Syndrome Day that will take place on March 21 and for which the Madrid shopping center received a few days before -on Friday March 17- the visit of a group of people with Down Syndrome. Down so they can see and learn how an office asset is managed.
Likewise, on Tuesday, March 21, an awareness workshop will take place at intu Xanadú given by Miriam Gil, from the Down Madrid Foundation Employment Service. As Elena Escalona, ??general director of Down Madrid, explains, “we carry out awareness workshops with the aim of making visible the abilities of people with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities, of which there are many. At the same time, these workshops try to end prejudices and stereotypes that may exist around them, to facilitate their social and, in this case, labor inclusion. In short, we seek to break many myths regarding intellectual disability”.
Aimed at both employees and visitors, the workshop will also present some guidelines for learning to work and communicate with people with Down syndrome.
Finally, intu Xanadú will join the mismatched socks initiative by giving its ‘GenteXana’ employees socks, and encouraging them to upload the photo to social networks and show their support through a very powerful message: remember that everyone We’re different. A change of routine in which socks are used as a gesture loaded with symbolism, alluding to the extra chromosome in people with Down syndrome.
Children’s workshops on water consumption
The Madrid shopping center will also carry out a very special activity to celebrate World Water Day on March 22. A date that seeks to raise awareness about the importance and impact it has on the lives of millions of people who do not have access to drinking water. Thanks to its responsible maintenance management and constant supervision, intu Xanadú has managed to reduce irrigation water consumption by 63% since 2017, thanks to good practices carried out with rainwater collection, among others.
For this reason, intu Xanadú celebrates its III Conference on World Water Day with the collaboration of Peque World, the free children’s space where children go to enjoy its workshops and games. Thus, during the week of March 20, the little ones will have the opportunity to make a drawing in which they express their own vision of the water problem, and accompanied by a message. The most ingenious phrases will be chosen to be displayed in the restrooms of the shopping center.
Blackout for the Planet
This week of solidarity and awareness will culminate on Saturday March 25 with the celebration of Earth Hour, a global movement to which intu Xanadú joins for another year to draw attention to the problem of climate change and the loss of biodiversity. Thus, the Madrid destination will dim the lighting between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., and will place candles during that time on the agora tables, its restaurant, leisure and entertainment space, to give visibility to the cause among its visitors.
intu Xanadú has been working for many years and focuses its efforts on obtaining better energy efficiency thanks to 100% renewable sources. Thus, it has obtained a saving of 35.5% in its consumption since 2017 and has installed photovoltaic production systems with a peak power of 497.28kWp, to which another will be added soon, for an additional 870kWp, in collaboration with Snozone .
These three initiatives are part of the ‘Intu Xanadú Commitment’, an action plan that the Madrid shopping center has been developing since 2017 to generate a positive impact on the local community economically, socially and environmentally.
