NOAIN, Spain, April 23, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Mobis (KRX: 012330), which has become a leader in basic electrification parts in the global electric vehicle market, is building an additional plant in Spain, the center of the European automobile market. Mobis currently operates battery system production plants in Korea, China and the Czech Republic, and is also building plants dedicated to basic electrification parts in the United States and Indonesia. This Spanish plant has great significance as it enters Western Europe, the center of the European automotive market, and is a plant dedicated to supplying a global customer.

Mobis announced that it held a groundbreaking ceremony for a plant dedicated to supplying Electric Vehicle Battery System Assembly (BSA) to Volkswagen in the Spanish province of Navarra on the afternoon of the 23rd local time. The construction inauguration ceremony, which is being carried out with the goal of mass production in 2026, was attended by around 100 interested people, including María Chivite, Sebastian Marco, Mayor of the Municipality of Noáin, senior executives of the client company and around 100 other interested parties.

The Spanish plant will carry out the important mission of “electrifying” and “expanding global orders”, which are the main business directions of Mobis. Mobis signed a large-scale BSA supply contract with Volkswagen last year and was seen as having expanded its reach and solidified its internal stability.

BSA refers to a finished product that combines a battery pack with electrical components and a BMS (battery management system) so that the battery can operate safely and efficiently in an electric vehicle. High capacity and efficient battery systems determine the quality and performance of electric vehicles.

Jung In-bo, director of the Spain Electrification Plant, said: “We will establish ourselves as a long-term partner of Volkswagen through stable parts supply and strive to supply follow-up models to our customers, as well as diversify supply sources in Europe.”

To this end, Mobis will invest approximately €120 million (excluding land and facilities) in its Spanish plant until 2030. It also plans to build cutting-edge electrification equipment technology to maximize efficiency. The plan is to use the Spanish plant as a specialized standard electrification model for global customers.

The land of the Spanish plant is about 150,000 square meters (?), enough to build 21 soccer fields. The total area is 50,000 square meters and up to 360,000 battery systems will be produced per year. The BSA produced here will be installed on the next-generation electric vehicle platform mass-produced at the Volkswagen plant located in Pamplona, ??14 kilometers away.

For its part, the Foral Community of Navarra is located in the extreme north of Spain and is the gateway to continental Europe, facing the border with France. It is known as the second largest automobile production base in Europe after Germany. The main car manufacturers and spare parts companies in Europe are concentrated 2 or 3 hours from Pamplona.
