– The potential of red ginseng as a natural treatment to improve withdrawal symptoms and dependence caused by drug addiction is scientifically proven
SEOUL, South Korea, Nov. 30, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — In a notable revelation at the Korean Ginseng Society conference held in Seoul last October, red ginseng has attracted attention for significantly improving dependency caused by drug addiction. Professor Oh Sei-kwan of Ewha Womans University School of Medicine found that consumption of red ginseng reduces the physical and psychological dependence induced by drug addiction and greatly improves withdrawal symptoms. As the global problem of drug addiction is becoming more serious, the result of this research generates even more anticipation.
According to the “World Drug Report 2023”, the number of drug users worldwide increased by 23.3% compared to ten years ago, reaching 296 million in 2021. Despite being a medical painkiller, fentanyl , commonly known as “zombie drug”, now has infiltrated even among teenagers, which is a worrying fact. In the absence of a clear cure for the increasing harms of drug addiction, the study on the effects of red ginseng in improving drug dependence is noteworthy.
Professor Oh’s research team, through experiments on mice, confirmed that the experimental group that consumed red ginseng showed a 50% reduction in jumping behaviors indicating physical dependence compared to the control group during the administration of morphine. In the conditioned place preference test to assess psychological dependence, the red ginseng group scored about three times lower than the control group, which significantly reduced the psychological dependence caused by drug addiction.
Additionally, the study revealed a link between red ginseng and liver detoxification. Glutathione in the liver, involved in detoxification, showed a recovery in the red ginseng group, which had decreased due to morphine addiction, indicating an effectiveness of approximately 90% compared to the control group.
The impact of red ginseng on improving liver function has been systematically studied. In October, at the academic conference of the Korean Society of Food Science and Nutrition in Busan, important research results on the improvement of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease by red ginseng were presented. Human trials with 94 patients confirmed that red ginseng consumption regulated the gut microbiota, increasing beneficial bacteria and reducing harmful bacteria, thus improving damaged livers.
This study scientifically demonstrates the usefulness of red ginseng in the treatment of drug addiction and confirms its potential as a natural treatment for substance dependence, marking an important milestone.
