At least seven workers from the NGO World Central Kitchen (WCK), led by chef José Andrés, died this Monday night in a bombing by the Israeli Army against their vehicle in the governorate of Deir al Balá, in the center of the Strip. of Gaza, within the framework of the Israeli offensive against the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).
Among the deceased are a British citizen, a Polish citizen, one Australian, two with dual American and Canadian nationality, as well as a Palestinian driver, according to the organization itself.
The NGO has recognized the deaths of workers, ensuring that it is a “tragedy” and regretting that humanitarian workers “should never be a target.”
“We have received word that members of the World Central Kitchen team have been killed in an attack by the Israel Defense Forces while working to support our humanitarian food delivery efforts in Gaza. It is a tragedy. Humanitarian aid workers and “Civilians should never be a target. Never,” the NGO has published on its social network account X, formerly Twitter.
The death of several humanitarian workers has also been confirmed by chef José Andrés himself, who has expressed himself in a message on the social network Furthermore, he has asked the Government of Israel to put an end to “this indiscriminate killing.”
“These are people (angels) with whom I served in Ukraine, Gaza, Turkey, Morocco, Bahamas, Indonesia. They are not faceless people, they are not nameless people,” he added, emphasizing to the Israeli authorities the need to “leave to restrict humanitarian aid” to the enclave.
“No more loss of innocent lives. Peace begins with our shared humanity. It has to start now,” the chef concluded, asking to allow “food as weapons” to be used and to stop “killing civilians and aid workers.”
The Israeli Army has already announced the opening of an “in-depth investigation” into the events and has stressed its “cooperation and coordination” with the NGO “in order to support its efforts to provide food and humanitarian aid to the residents of the Gaza Strip”.
The World Central Kitchen workers were in the Palestinian enclave in the context of the humanitarian mission initiated together with the NGO Open Arms to establish a maritime humanitarian corridor between Cyprus and the Strip in the face of the enormous difficulties faced by operations for the entry of aid by land.
