They have also carried human wisdom and history, demonstrating great ecological, economic, social and cultural value.
Ziquejie Terraces, located in Xinhua County, Hunan Province, are included in the World Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) and World Heritage Irrigation Structures (WHIS). The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has recognized 78 GIAHS around the world, with China leading the way with 19 of them.
On September 20, the conference “From Ziquejie Terraces to the World”: Global Agricultural Culture Exchange and Mutual Learning was held in Xinhua County, Hunan Province. More than 100 participants from China, the United Kingdom, the United States, Thailand, Rwanda, Pakistan and other countries discussed GIAHS and WHIS as Ziquejie Terraces. The relevant parties jointly published the Consensus on Terrace Preservation and Development during the conference.
The Consensus requires identifying and recording the location of terraces, promoting typical cases, proactively and actively implementing policies, respecting public opinions and strengthening international cooperation. It also advocates jointly enhancing the exchange and mutual learning of agricultural culture, exploring new ways to accelerate the preservation and development of terraces, and contributing to the principle of “preservation as is, dynamic utilization and integrated business formats” of terraces Worldwide. .
