CAIRO, October 26, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — At the UNESCO-Huawei International Forum on Digital Platforms and Skills for Teachers held yesterday, the Egyptian Ministry of Education officially launched the National Distance Education Center for Continuing Professional Development of the Educators.

The learning center was created within the framework of the UNESCO-Huawei Open Schools for All project, which is being carried out in Egypt, Ghana and Ethiopia between 2020 and 2023.

At the beginning of his speech, Dr. Reda Hegazy, Minister of Education and Technical Teaching, expressed his satisfaction for attending the forum and expressed his gratitude and recognition to UNESCO and Huawei for their support and for choosing Egypt as a partner of the Schools project. Open.

He also praised the achievements made by the Open Schools project in cooperation with the Professional Academy of Teachers and the UNESCO Cairo Office, explaining: “The Open Schools program has achieved notable achievements in the education sector in Egypt in which refers to capacity development and the preparation of enrichment training courses for teachers, various digital platforms and the creation of the National Center for Distance Education, to improve the competencies of educators in Egypt.”

Schools Open to Technology for All (TeOSS)

Alongside the opening of the learning centre, the forum explored best practices in relation to the TeOSS project. Executed in collaboration with the education ministries of Egypt, Ethiopia and Ghana, the UNESCO-Huawei TeOSS project is piloting digital education platforms in the three African countries. It also provides digital skills training to teachers and students, develops policy frameworks for digital education and evaluates the effectiveness of the project with a view to expanding TeOSS to other African countries.

In Egypt, for example, 300 teachers have received digital skills training through the project, and the new learning center will boost distance learning and digital literacy skills for 950,000 K-12 educators in underserved communities.

In his speech, Sobhi Tawil, Director of the UNESCO Future of Learning and Innovation Team, welcomed attendees to this forum, praising the cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of Education and its role in supporting the Horizons. futures.

He added that the forum is part of Huawei’s project to enable open schools and raise digital learning skills since 2020, which has contributed to raising the quality of education, guaranteeing access and continuity of education in Egypt, Ethiopia and Ghana and that Egypt was one of the first countries to implement the digital learning initiative, noting that the opening of the National Distance Education Center in Egypt represents a major step in digital transformation.

The TeOSS project is designed to combine online and offline learning in order to maximize educational outcomes, and also to ensure continuity of learning under both normal and crisis conditions. According to UNICEF, for example, more than 616 million students were still affected by the total or partial closure of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic in January 2022.

Building digital education capacity at the national level can help mitigate learning disruption if unforeseen events occur.
