– Noubar Afeyan, co-founder of the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative, makes a global call to prevent a second Armenian genocide

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., April 24, 2024/PRNewswire/ — The Aurora Humanitarian Initiative today announced that its co-founder, Noubar Afeyan, has issued a global call to action to prevent a second Armenian genocide, on the 109th anniversary of the Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide. Afeyan issued the global call to action in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The London Times, as well as on global social media channels.

The Call to Action highlights the similarities between atrocities that took place 109 years ago and are repeated today:

“As we mourn the past, history repeats itself. Armenians are once again subjected to ethnic cleansing, political leaders are illegally held hostage, and Armenia faces existential threats to its sovereignty and self-determination.”

“An occupied world has been looking the other way. That is why it is not known for certain that, since last September, Azerbaijan has expelled 120,000 Armenians – the entire population of Artsakh, the Armenian enclave also known as Nagorno Karabakh – from their homeland ancestral”.

It also calls on the Azerbaijani government to restore peace in the region and act fairly with the prisoners it has illegally captured:

“Azerbaijan also continues to illegally hold Armenian hostages, including my friend and colleague Ruben Vardanyan, a businessman and philanthropist who was briefly Minister of State of Artsakh. Meanwhile, escalating clashes on the Armenian border continue to fuel growing fears that Azerbaijan may be planning to invade Armenia.”

“Azerbaijan should find no reason for conflict with Armenia today. Following last year’s invasion, Armenia renounced its self-governance efforts in Nagorno-Karabakh. Let Azerbaijan now insist that peace must be based on Armenia accepting incursions on its own border recognized international law to allow a corridor connecting Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan and Turkey is illegal and unfair.

Commenting on his effort to raise awareness about the injustices committed against Armenians and the fear of a second genocide, Afeyan explained: “Today marks the 109th anniversary of 1.5 million Armenians being driven from their homes and killed at the hands of the Ottoman Turks, and now it is happening again. Today we must do more than mourn the massacres of the past. It is time to step forward to prevent the massacres of the future.
