BEIJING, July 19, 2023/PRNewswire/ — This is a report from China Daily:

Participants at a forum on Tibet development held in late May from home and abroad hailed the achievements made on all fronts in southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.

Officially named the Xizang 2023 China Development Forum, the event opened on May 23 in Beijing and focused on Tibet’s new chapter of high-quality development. Xizang is the Chinese name for Tibet.

The forum also served to pool wisdom for the continued development of the autonomous region.

The one-day event brought together more than 150 officials and experts in various fields, as well as representatives of domestic and foreign companies and media.

Australian sinologist Colin Macherras praised the development of Tibet in recent decades, citing his experience gained during his visits to the country.

He stated that Tibet has eliminated absolute poverty, and its infrastructure and standard of living have improved dramatically.

The achievements of the Tibet Autonomous Region in the fight against poverty have been widely praised at the forum.

Tibet used to be the only contiguous provincial-level poverty-stricken region in China. It had achieved the historic feat of eradicating absolute poverty by the end of 2019, with 628,000 people lifted out of poverty.

Regional GDP reached 213.3 billion yuan (29.74 billion dollars) in 2022, which is a giant leap from the 1959 figure, which was just 174 million yuan, according to official data.

Prior to the forum, foreign participants were invited to tour the Tibetan cities of Lhasa and Nyingchi, visiting villages, schools and communities.

Guibe Guillaume, French employee of China Petroleum

“At 5,200 meters above sea level, I could receive my emails and chat on my mobile,” Guillaume explained.

Maria Gustava, Mozambique’s ambassador to China, said Tibet’s practical experience in poverty reduction and rural development shows that effective and comprehensive planning is necessary to reduce poverty.

Tibet’s success in alleviating rural poverty by harnessing technology-based farming methods is a source of inspiration for developing countries like Mozambique in their efforts to fight poverty and promote sustainable development, Gustava said.
