World Stroke Day: The World Stroke Organization calls for prevention measures as global mortality from stroke is expected to increase by 50%
GENEVA, October 27, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The World Stroke Organization (WSO) is calling on governments and healthcare systems to implement the recommendations on stroke prevention set out in the new WSO Commission on Neurology report. Key recommendations of the commission’s report include improving access to affordable medicines for the primary and secondary prevention of stroke as part of Universal Health Coverage, potentially funded by taxes on tobacco, alcohol and sugar. Also highlighted is public health workforce development, with a focus on implementing protocol-based shared tasks/shifting from highly trained doctors and nurses to trained community health workers who can engage and help people Identify and address your risk of stroke. Financial incentives should also be offered to improve staff retention and encourage relocation to rural areas. The report also recommends measures to improve health literacy in relation to stroke prevention.
