The price of olive oil has skyrocketed by 51% since December, when the Government had not yet implemented the VAT reduction on certain foods, reaching 9.25 euros in October, according to data analyzed by To its end.

The consumer association has warned that the basket of basic products selected by the Government to reduce VAT and combat inflation costs more today than in December, when the measure had not been implemented.

Specifically, 0.06%, from an average ticket of 33.67 euros collected on December 29, to the 33.74 euros corresponding to October 26. In relation to the prices collected on January 30 (once discounting the effect of post-Christmas promotions), at 29.61 euros, the basket of basics currently costs 13.93% more.

Regarding olive oil, the liter in Mercadona, El Corte Inglés (Grupo El Corte Inglés), Carrefour and Alcampo did not exceed 6 euros, while in Dia it marked 7.59 euros, while currently all chains mark the same price, 9.25 euros per liter of virgin olive oil.

The consumer association has highlighted that the same thing happens with sunflower oil, which also registers the same price, 1.55 euros, in all large chains such as Mercadona, El Corte Inglés, Carrefour and Alcampo, with Dia being the only one which stands out from this price and scores 1.6 euros.

Since January, the shopping basket of basic products has only increased progressively. Thus, prices today are more expensive in all the large distribution chains, except El Corte Inglés, which marks 3.29 less on its October ticket (32.2 euros) compared to December (35.49 euros).

Mercadona goes from 33.69 euros to 34.18 euros; Carrefour, from 33.87 euros to 34.02 euros; Alcampo, 30.32 euros to 2.88 euros, and DIA, from 35 euros to 35.40 euros.
