MADRID, 20 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Vox Parliamentary Group has asked the Government about the measures it will promote to guarantee the right of “deaf-mute minors” to use Spanish sign language in Catalonia and the Executive reproaches that this term “has a pejorative aspect and is annoying”.

In his response registered in the Congress of Deputies, to which Europa Press has had access, the Executive recalls that the ‘Guide for a non-sexist use of language’ includes that the State Confederation of Deaf People (CNSE) “has clearly indicated that the designation of a person as deaf-mute has a pejorative aspect and, as such, incorrect and that it is annoying”.

“And it is that traditionally it was thought that a deaf person was ‘apparently’ incapable of communicating with others. However, this is not the case, since deaf people can communicate through sign language and also through oral language (in their written, spoken modality and each one according to their abilities)”, added the Government.

Likewise, it has stressed that the law by which Spanish sign languages ??are recognized and the means of support for oral communication of deaf, hard of hearing and deafblind people are regulated, regulates Spanish sign language as the language of the deaf, hard of hearing and deafblind people in Spain “who freely decide to use it, without prejudice to the recognition of Catalan sign language in their field of linguistic use”.

Therefore, the Government has highlighted that “both the Catalan language and the Catalan sign language may be freely used in their specific field of linguistic use”. “However, you can also freely choose to use Spanish, as well as Spanish sign language, since it is a recognized and guaranteed right in national regulations,” he added.
