The Chinese president, Xi Jinping, has invited his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to visit the Asian giant this year with a view to improving relations between the parties.

Together with him, Xi has also transferred the invitation to the Russian Prime Minister, Mikhail Mishustin, and has highlighted the importance of the Russian presence in view of the forum to be held in the country on the Belt and Road initiative, with which Beijing seeks to drive large investments in infrastructure around the world.

“I have invited Putin to come to China when it suits him throughout this year as China will host the third international forum of its kind and Putin hosted the previous two forums,” he said during a press conference.

In this sense, he has highlighted the importance of promoting a closer bilateral relationship between the parties, for which he has reported that Mishustin is scheduled to meet with his counterpart, Li Qiang.

Xi has used the occasion to stress the importance of restoring the mechanism that allows the two senior officials to meet regularly. Sources close to the matter have revealed to the TASS news agency that Mishustin has already accepted the invitation.
