Siegel was the son of Jewish immigrants who fled Lithuania in 1900. Shuster was born in Toronto, and moved to Cleveland in 1924.

Shuster and Siegel met in high school. They shared a passion for science fiction, adventure fiction, and movies. Although they created Superman and other companion characters like Clark Kent and Lois Lane together, it took them nearly six years to find a publisher. They were able to sell the rights of DC Comics for $130. Superman first appeared in 1938’s National Periodical Publications Action Comics #1. He was then featured in his own title in the year following.
