The spokeswoman for the PSOE in the Senate, Eva Granados, has guaranteed that this legislature will increase the use of co-official languages ??in the Upper House, as Pedro Sánchez promised with Pere Aragonés in the Dialogue Table, although she rules out extending this use to all debates as requested by Junts in its proposal to reform the Regulation that is currently being processed.
In an interview granted to Europa Press, Eva Granados has refused to universalize the use of the co-official languages ??in the control sessions, alleging that “the immediacy of the debate in parliamentarism is essential”. “When there is an interpellation, a live debate, we have a language that unites us and that allows us that immediacy that exists in parliamentarism”, she has defended.
Currently, a Junts proposal to reform the Senate Regulations to universalize the use of co-official languages ??is being processed in the Senate, which would cost approximately 950,000 euros, according to the economic report of the initiative.
However, the socialist spokesperson has pointed out that the variable that prevents the PSOE from ruling out extending its use “is not the economic one”, but, as she understands, the universalization of the co-official languages ??could “limit the immediacy of the debate”.
In any case, Eva Granados also recalled that the use of co-official languages ??is already allowed in the Senate in the General Committee of the Autonomous Communities and in the debate on motions: “And we put on our earpieces, I for Basque, because a lot of Catalan is also spoken here”.
Of course, the socialist leader has assured that during this legislature there will be a change in the Senate Regulations so that the co-official languages ??are used more in the debates, although she has avoided specifying whether this reform will be carried out before the end of the year, pointing out that “there are other emergencies on the table”.
Precisely, the increase in co-official languages ??in the Upper House was an agreement reached by the central government and Catalan at the Dialogue Table last summer. In this context, Granados has recognized that “at the moment this reform is not on the table”, although he has admitted contacts with Junts and the rest of the parliamentary groups to carry it out.
What he has not been able to specify is how this use of Catalan, Basque and Galician, which can already be used in motions and in some committees, would be extended: “We have to see in what parliamentary initiatives they would be used.”
On the position of the PP in this approach, Eva Granados has encouraged “ask Mr. Feijóo.” “He bets on that cordial bilingualism when he goes to Catalonia, to see if he will like that there is that cordial multilingualism that represents Spain in the General Courts”, she has asked herself.
