MADRID, 26 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Former US President Donald Trump has returned to Washington, the country’s capital, on Tuesday since he left the White House after losing the elections to the current president, Joe Biden, to give a political speech within the framework of a summit organized by the NGO America First Political Institute (AFPI).
Trump’s return to the capital comes at a time of heightened tension as the congressional investigation into the January 6, 2021 assault on the US Capitol continues. The investigations indicate that it was precisely his refusal to recognize the results of the 2020 elections that led to the assault, which resulted in five deaths and more than fifty detainees.
The New York tycoon, who is testing the possibility of running for president again in 2024, plans to address the summit attendees this Tuesday afternoon. “He is still the leader of the America First movement,” said Marc Lotter, head of communications for the AFPI, in statements to CNN.
“He is the name with the most weight. He is the visionary behind the policies that brought him to the White House and when you look at what is happening right now in the country, many people ask for his leadership to return,” he asserted, before indicating that people “want cheaper gas, higher wages and not what is now.”
His visit to Washington also highlights the schism between him and his former vice president, Mike Pence, whom Trump has publicly blamed for refusing to reject the election results in some key states for the course of the vote.
Trump has used his latest speeches to continue talking about the situation surrounding the 2020 elections. His appearances, however, have focused on supporting the candidates who are running for the November midterms and who have endorsed him during all this time.
“He’s going to speak out to give voice to that agenda, to deliver those messages with an eye toward midterm and beyond. I think there’s no one better than the former president to do that,” Lotter said. “What happens next is completely up to the voters and those who turn out,” he added.
