The deputy Jaume Asens does not specify what other crimes of the Criminal Code he wants to change

MADRID, 24 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

United We Can has announced this Thursday night that it will present amendments to the reform that repeals sedition because it wants to modify more crimes of the Penal Code, although it has not given further details in this regard.

“This reform is the result of an agreement and it does not go as far as we would like,” Jaume Asens, a deputy for Unidas Podemos, acknowledged in his turn to speak in the debate being held in Congress on the organic law proposal presented by PSOE and United We Can to repeal the crime of sedition.

Asens has ensured that the Criminal Code “is still plagued” with crimes that are not viewed favorably by the ‘purple’ formation. He has celebrated, however, the text presented together with the PSOE. “Today it is a victory for democracy that this legislative proposal is approved”, he pointed out.

In the framework of his intervention, the leader of United We Can has defended five reasons for sending the crime of sedition “to the trunk of History”. He has insisted that this criminal offense is a “relic of the past”, a “pre-constitutional anomaly” that “does not conform to European standards”, which – in his opinion – represents a “threat to the right to protest”. .

In addition, he has assured that the reform that the Council is debating this Thursday “is an important step to take the conflict out of court in Catalonia” which comes to “modernize the Penal Code” as “a matter of democratic hygiene”.

Specifically, PSOE and Unidas Podemos have proposed repealing the current crime of sedition and replacing it with another aggravated public disorder that contemplates for the authorities penalties of 3 to 5 years in prison –compared to 10 to 15 years that the current Penal Code includes. — and disqualification from 6 to 8 years –compared to 10 to 15 years established by the current law–.

The text that is being debated and voted on this Thursday proposes eliminating article 544 of the Penal Code — which defines the crime of sedition — and modifying article 557 to give rise to what the President of the Government called “aggravated public disorder.”
