A Burmese court has sentenced the country’s former ‘de facto’ leader Aung San Suu Kyi to seven years in prison this Friday in a case open against her on five charges of corruption during her time in government.

This latest sentence, from a military court, brings Suu Kyi’s total jail time to 33 years in prison, extinguishing any chance of her returning to politics as long as the military junta remains in power, as reported. Bloomberg.

The hearing has considered that the leader did not follow financial regulations in the rental and purchase of a helicopter between 2019 and 2021, according to a person familiar with the case, who requested anonymity because the ruling has not been published.

The United Nations Security Council approved last week for the first time a resolution that calls for an end to the violence in Burma and urges the military junta to take “immediate measures” to comply with the ‘road map’ outlined by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The resolution, promoted by the British mission to the United Nations, calls for the release of all political prisoners, including the country’s former ‘de facto’ leader Aung San Suu Kyi and former President Win Myint, detained after the coup on 1 February. february.
