The mayor of kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, has called on the population of the Ukrainian capital to accumulate food and other essential goods while sources from his administration have confirmed that there are plans for a total evacuation of the city if power cuts persist during the winter.
“I ask everyone to start accumulating drinking water, power sources (energy), food and protective clothing,” the mayor declared this past night, while the meteorological services advance that the capital will begin to record night temperatures below zero starting next Wednesday.
“In case there is severe frost and there is no hot water supply, so that the pipes do not break and the system does not stop working, we have prepared a plan to empty the system’s water drainage,” explained the mayor in comments collected by Ukrinform.
The notice comes after the Ukrainian state operator Ukrernergo announced this past Saturday power cuts in seven regions of the country, including the kyiv region and the capital to compensate for the loss of energy caused by the Russian invasion.
“What I ask people”, continued the mayor, “is to prepare for a bad scenario in the event that the supply is cut off completely, because Russia is doing everything it can to deprive this city of electricity and water”.
Meanwhile, sources from his administration have confirmed to the ‘New York Times’ that they have begun planning the total evacuation of the city’s three million residents in the event of a total power outage.
“We understand that if Russia continues with such attacks, we may lose the entire energy supply system,” Roman Tkachuk, head of the Department of Municipal Security of the kyiv City Council, told the American newspaper.
“If there is no electricity, there will be no water or sewage. Therefore, the government and the city administration are now taking all possible measures to protect our electricity supply system,” he added before qualifying that, At the moment, the situation seems under control.
