The new Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, has vindicated before his American counterpart, Antony Blinken, Italy’s commitment to NATO and the G7 after the controversial statements leaked to the press by Silvio Berlusconi, president of the political party of which he forms part.
In a telephone call, Tajani assured Blinken of Italy’s will to deepen “excellent bilateral relations” and to continue with the “common effort” to face global challenges, according to a statement from the Italian Foreign Ministry.
Blinken, for his part, congratulated his counterpart on his appointment as foreign minister, and expressed his desire to work together in order to “strengthen the transatlantic partnership,” the US State Department reported.
Both ministers discussed the current need to support Ukraine and respond to Russia’s “brutal war”, as well as to defend “Human Rights throughout the world” and respond to economic and energy challenges.
They have also confirmed their commitment to effective cooperation and close coordination at the bilateral level in NATO, the G7 and EU-US relations, all in the interest of promoting Euro-Atlantic security and supporting multilateralism and the international order based on in norms.
This conversation takes place almost a week after the Italian agency LaPresse leaked an audio of the former Italian prime minister and president of the Forza Italia party, Silvio Berlusconi, in which he claimed that the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, was to blame for the began the Russian invasion of his country.
