The Peruvian Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation against the president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, as well as against three members of her Executive, to clarify the death of 28 civilians during clashes between security forces and demonstrators during the protests that shook the country in December.

Specifically, the State Attorney General, Patricia Benavides, has ordered the initiation of preliminary proceedings against Boluarte, the current Prime Minister, Alberto Otárola, in his capacity as Defense Minister; the former Minister of the Interior César Cervantes, and the former Prime Minister Pedro Angulo, reported ‘La República’.

“The Office of the Prosecutor of the Nation arranged to carry out preliminary proceedings regarding the complaints presented against the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte; Alberto Otárola, in his capacity as Minister of Defense; César Cervantes, former Minister of the Interior and others”, wields a statement from the Public ministry.

The complaint also includes senior police officers, including the head of the Ayacucho Police Macro Region, Antero Mejía Escajadillo, and the general commander of the Second Military Infantry Brigade of Ayacucho, Jesús Vera Ipenza.

The investigation was born after the complaint of several lawyers before the Prosecutor for Human Rights, interculturality and terrorism of Ayacucho, a municipality in whose airport a large part of the total number of protesters killed nationwide lost their lives.
