The commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Hussein Salami, has warned the protesters that “the protests end today”, in a message to the participants of the marches that have been touring the country for 40 days in protest of death in custody of the young Mahsa Amini after her arrest for wearing the wrong veil.
“The protesters must not test the patience of the system,” the general warned this Saturday before addressing the country’s youth directly: “The protests end today. Don’t go out into the streets anymore.”
Salami has addressed supporters of the authorities during the funeral for the victims of Wednesday’s attack on the Shiraz mosque; an attack for which the Islamic State has claimed responsibility but which the authorities attribute to the culmination of days of riots fueled by the country’s enemy powers.
Salami has insisted, as the Iranian intelligence agencies did on Friday night, that the disturbances since mid-September are mainly the result of a conspiracy by the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel and Saudi Arabia.
“Do not sell your country and honor to America, do not slap the faces of the warriors who have used their chest to protect you, take off the disguise of American soldiers, do not become pawns of the enemies of the country,” he said in statements collected by the official Iranian news agency, IRNA.
According to Iranian NGOs, mainly linked to the opposition, at least 253 protesters have died in Iran since the beginning of the demonstrations after Amini’s death in custody on September 16, including 34 children, according to the balance collected by the Kurdish news agency Rudaw.
