The ninth vote fails in a blockade that is shaping up to be the longest in 164 years
MADRID, 5 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Up to three Republican candidates have presented themselves this Thursday as candidates in the ninth ballot to choose the new speaker of the United States House of Representatives while the Democrats continue to unanimously support the representative of New York Hakeem Jeffries.
The candidacy of Republican Kevin Hern, from Oklahoma, has slipped into the ninth ballot this Thursday, reaping three votes against the boycotted candidate, Kevin McCarthy, who has been left with 200 supports, as reported by CNN.
The other nominee, the Republican Byron Donalds, from New York, seems to have consolidated in the last rounds, with 17 votes while the Democrat Jeffries remains with the same votes from the beginning: 212. The blockade in the House of Representatives, with a tenth round, is the longest in 164 years.
Specifically, the historical record is 133 rounds of voting in the year 1855, while the second longest was 63, in 1849. Having failed, this has become the longest vote since 1834, when ten rounds, as reported by NBC News.
The House of Representatives cannot continue with its activity until its president is elected. US President Joe Biden has previously described the blockade situation in the House as “shameful”.
