The Emeritus King arrived in Madrid late this morning to attend the meeting of the mayor of the capital, José Luis Martínez Almeida, with Teresa Urquijo y Moreno this Saturday.
Don Juan Carlos has left the authorities terminal at Barajas Airport smiling and waving, according to images captured by Europa Press cameras.
The emeritus plans to attend Almeida’s wedding tomorrow given that his future wife is the granddaughter of his first cousin, Teresa de Borbón-Dos Sicilias. Doña Sofía as well as the Infantas Elena and Cristina will also attend the ceremony, according to ‘ABC’.
This will be the fourth visit that the emeritus will make to Madrid and the ninth to Spain since he moved to the United Arab Emirates in August 2020, where he has established his permanent residence.
The one who was King for almost four decades made his first trip to Spain in May 2022, which was not without controversy due to the media attention generated by his visit to Sanxenxo to attend the regattas. Then, he also went to Zarzuela, where he met with Felipe VI and he expressed his discomfort with how his stay had been managed.
Since then, Don Juan Carlos has made seven other visits, with increasingly shorter periods of time between them and also with less informational commotion. The last of them took place in mid-March when he went first to Vitoria for some medical examinations and then to Sanxenxo.
According to ‘El Mundo’, Don Juan Carlos will take advantage of his stay in Madrid to go to the Zarzuela Palace on Sunday, although from the King’s House, as is customary in everything surrounding the emeritus, they have not wanted to confirm this end and if there will be a meeting with the Kings.
The emeritus also briefly passed through Zarzuela on October 31, the day on which Princess Leonor swore the Constitution after reaching the age of majority, before attending the family celebration that was organized for that occasion at the El Pardo Palace. The former monarch traveled to Madrid for the last time in December on the occasion of Infanta Elena’s 60th birthday, which was also attended by Don Felipe and Doña Letizia.
