MADRID, 18 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Renfe will invest 2.2 million euros in the transformation of 90 hopper cars from its material fleet, which had been dedicated to the transportation of coal, to meet the needs arising from the transportation of cereals.

The company explains in a press release that the action, which will be carried out in various phases, covers until 2026. Specifically, the transformation will consist of the installation of closures in the upper part of the hoppers, which are currently uncovered, the installation of a lateral access platform to the roof and modification of the gates to guarantee watertightness. In addition, the new material will be painted and labeled with the Renfe Mercancías brand criteria.

The decision has been adopted to meet the demand for transporting grain from the ports where it arrives to cover domestic consumption. Spanish ports imported nearly 17 million tons of cereals in 2022, of which Renfe Mercancías transported more than 1.1 million tons.
