BRUSELAS, 24 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The European Union presented this Monday a new tool to combat the rise of Russian disinformation in the midst of military aggression in Ukraine, in an attempt to educate and provide information to European citizens to identify media manipulation strategies.
Through a new tool within the framework of the specialized website of the Kremlin’s Foreign Action Service against disinformation, ‘EuvsDisinfo’, the EU wants to offer European citizens information on “the mechanisms, tactics, common narratives and the actors behind disinformation and the manipulation of information”.
The new page sheds light on “the pro-Kremlin media ecosystem and also explains the philosophy behind foreign information manipulation and interference,” the European Commission said in a statement.
The launch of this initiative coincides with the eighth month of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and at a time when the EU has registered a “significant increase” in disinformation narratives promoted by the Russian media.
As an example, the EU points to the proliferation of use of the term ‘Nazi’ in pro-Kremlin media, which has increased by 300 percent, as well as allusions to a genocide in eastern Ukraine, which Russia attributes to the authorities. Ukrainians to intervene in the country. In total, in the last year, community diplomacy has registered more than 1,200 cases of disinformation related to Ukraine.
